Explosion in Ibadan: Illegal Miners Blamed for Tragedy; Oyo Gov, Makinde Confirms 2 Deaths, 77 Injuries
In a press briefing today, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State revealed that an explosion in Ibadan on Tuesday evening, January 16, 2024, was caused by explosives stored by illegal miners. The incident claimed the lives of two individuals, while 77 others sustained injuries.
Governor Makinde, who visited the scene of the explosion in Bodija, Ibadan, expressed sorrow over the tragic event. He reported that preliminary investigations indicated the presence of explosive devices in a house occupied by illegal miners in the Bodija area, leading to the catastrophic blast.
“We have deployed first responders and relevant agencies for comprehensive search and rescue operations,” stated Governor Makinde. “Earth-moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security personnel have been mobilized to address the aftermath of the explosion. Medical personnel are providing necessary assistance to the injured, with 77 victims identified so far, and sadly, 2 fatalities.”
The governor assured that the government would cover the medical bills of all victims and provide temporary accommodation for those whose homes were affected, supporting them in rebuilding their lives.
“Preliminary investigations by security agencies revealed that illegal miners had stored explosive devices in one of the houses in Bodija, leading to the blast. Investigations are ongoing, and those responsible will be held accountable,” Governor Makinde affirmed.
He urged residents to remain calm, stay away from the incident site, and contact emergency services at 615 for assistance. The governor expressed gratitude to first responders, security personnel, and medical teams involved in the ongoing rescue operations.
As the rescue efforts continue, Governor Makinde called for prayers for those affected by the disaster, emphasizing the importance of community support during this challenging time.
