Ex-Lawmaker Farouk Lawan Released from Kuje Prison After Completing Sentence
Former House of Representatives member, Farouk Lawan, has been released from Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja after serving a five-year sentence for bribery. Lawan, who once chaired the House ad hoc committee investigating the 2012 multi-billion naira petrol subsidy fraud, walked free on Tuesday, marking the end of his legal ordeal.
Lawan was convicted in 2021 after being found guilty of accepting a $500,000 bribe from Femi Otedola, the then-chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited, during a sting operation set up by the businessman. The bribe was linked to the subsidy probe, where Lawan had allegedly agreed to remove Zenon from the list of companies implicated in the fraud.
In a statement following his release, Lawan expressed gratitude, saying, “Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I am thankful to Allah for seeing me through this trial. My gratitude extends to my family, friends, and associates who stood by me during this difficult phase.”
