Enugu Security Officer Arrested for Killing Cousin Who Accused Him of Sexual Abuse
A 51-year-old security officer has been taken into custody in Enugu State over the killing of his 19-year-old cousin, whom authorities say had accused him of years of sexual abuse. Police in Nsukka, supported by members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, arrested Emeka Emmanuel Nwangwu on December 1 at a pharmacy in the town.
Police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe said the victim, Loveth Uloma Nwangwu, had reported the suspect to Umabor Police Division on November 28, alleging that he began abusing her in 2019 when she moved into his home at age 13 following the death of his wife. She told investigators he isolated her from relatives and friends, threatened her life, and held her against her will.
According to the police, the teenager managed to escape to her family home in Enugu-Ezike but was allegedly forced back by the suspect at gunpoint and confined to a room in his house. She later slipped out with a spare key and reported to the police, who issued her a medical report form and invited the suspect and relatives for questioning. Officers say he admitted wrongdoing during the visit, after which the family initially opted for non-prosecution on personal and cultural grounds.
Police report that the situation took a deadly turn while the teenager was receiving treatment at a pharmacy in Nsukka. The suspect allegedly forced his way inside, attacked her, and inflicted severe head injuries. She was rushed to hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
Nwangwu was immediately re-arrested and remains in custody. Enugu State Police Commissioner Mamman Bitrus Giwa condemned the killing and expressed condolences to the family. He directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough inquiry and ensure the case is brought to court swiftly.
