Enugu-Opi-Nsukka Road Remains Unsafe, Say Motorists

Motorists and commuters on the Enugu-Opi-Nsukka road have raised fresh concerns about the ongoing insecurity on the route, particularly along the Ugwogo stretch. Despite the numerous security checkpoints, gunmen, suspected to be kidnappers, continue to operate with impunity.

Last week, Nnadozie, the immediate past chairman of Uwani Local Government Area, was attacked on the road. Though he narrowly escaped being kidnapped, he sustained minor injuries from the gunfire aimed at his vehicle.

The attack, which occurred between security checkpoints, has fueled suspicions of possible collusion between the criminals and some corrupt security personnel. As a result, motorists are increasingly avoiding the road during evening hours.

A regular driver on the Enugu-Nsukka route expressed frustration: “We don’t know what is happening on this road. There are numerous security checkpoints manned by soldiers and police, yet we don’t feel safe. How can we trust the security when attacks happen so close to their posts, and they fail to intervene? It feels like foul play.”

Despite efforts by Governor Peter Mbah to support security agencies, the situation remains dire. Many motorists now prefer alternative routes, especially after 5 PM, to ensure their safety.
