End of the Road for 9 Billionaire Kidnappers in Lagos

The notorious era of high-profile abductions in Lagos has taken a decisive turn with the downfall of a daring kidnap gang. This group, which emerged after the arrest of infamous kidnap kingpin Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, aka Evans, in 2017, has met its end following a dramatic police operation.

New Tactics, Same Fear

Operating primarily in Lagos, the gang targeted wealthy individuals, demanding ransoms in both naira and dollars. Their preferred hunting grounds included Ago Palace Way, Isolo, Okota, the Ladipo auto spare parts market, and Festac, often using the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway for quick getaways.

Police reports reveal that the gang operated with a ruthless efficiency, demanding ransoms of at least N1 billion and threatening to kill victims if any information was leaked to authorities.

Dramatic Takedown

Last week, the gang’s reign of terror ended in a violent confrontation in the Ladipo area. The gang attempted to kidnap a wealthy international businessman but was thwarted by the Commissioner of Police Special Squad. In the ensuing shootout, nine gang members were killed. Police recovered four AK-47 rifles, four semi-automatic pistols, nine AK-47 magazines, three walkie-talkies, one POS machine, and a loudspeaker. Two operational vehicles, a black Toyota 4Runner and a blue Lexus RX350, were also seized. However, two suspects managed to escape into the crowd.

Intelligence and Preparation

The successful operation was the result of meticulous planning by detectives from the Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja, led by Commissioner of Police Adegoke Fayoade. Acting on detailed intelligence reports, they executed the raid with precision, having previously struggled to round up the gang.

A Trail of Kidnappings

The gang’s activities included several high-profile abductions:

  • On April 10, 2023, a businessman in Ikotun was kidnapped, with $8,000 paid as ransom.
  • Later that day, another businessman in Ago Okota was abducted and N5 million was demanded.
  • On April 23, 2023, a millionaire drinks seller in Ago Okota was kidnapped and reportedly paid close to N1 billion.
  • Various other kidnappings saw ransoms ranging from $6,000 to N120 million.

Final Acts

Their criminal spree continued into December 2023, targeting businessmen and extracting significant ransoms. The gang believed they had eluded police attention, but detectives were closing in, tracking their signature vehicles and military-style operations.

The Final Showdown

In a scene reminiscent of a Hollywood thriller, detectives laid a trap at Ojekunle Street in Ladipo market. The kidnappers, unaware of the police presence, engaged in a shootout that lasted over three hours, resulting in the death of nine gang members. Two managed to escape with injuries.

Aftermath

The police are continuing their pursuit of the remaining gang members and have plans to raid their hideouts. Information has surfaced about the gang leader’s luxurious lifestyle, including multiple homes and marriages, indicating the extensive reach of their criminal enterprise.
