Eguavoen Steps Down as Interim Coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles
Augustine Eguavoen has officially stepped down as the interim coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles. Eguavoen, who was appointed just days ago following Bruno Labbadia’s decision to reject the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF)’s offer, made the announcement on Tuesday after leading the team to a goaless draw against Rwanda.
Eguavoen’s short-term stint began with a promising 3-0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo last weekend. However, the coach clarified that his appointment was limited to just two matches, which he has now completed.
“I was given a mandate to handle two games,” Eguavoen told reporters, as quoted by Own Goal. “I’m pleased with the boys’ performance and want to thank the NFF leadership for their support. The team showed great discipline and hard work.”
Despite his departure, Eguavoen hinted at his continued involvement with the team, particularly ahead of their upcoming clash against Libya. “I haven’t been briefed about Libya, but I can offer insights to help the next coach. No team is easy to beat anymore, but with the spirit these boys have shown, the future looks bright.”
