EFCC Arrests Former NHIS Boss Usman Yusuf in Abuja Raid
Operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested Professor Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), during a raid on his Abuja residence. The arrest took place at approximately 4:46 p.m. on Wednesday, with gun-wielding officers taking the professor, a specialist in haematology-oncology and bone marrow transplantation, into custody in the presence of his family.
Sources close to the investigation revealed that Yusuf was escorted to an undisclosed location following his arrest. While the EFCC has yet to publicly disclose the reasons behind his detention, it is speculated that the arrest may be linked to his tenure at NHIS. According to one source, the exact details of his arrest cannot be revealed at this time, as investigations are ongoing, though Yusuf is expected to assist detectives with their inquiries.
Yusuf’s dismissal from his position as NHIS Executive Secretary occurred in 2019, following a recommendation for removal by a fact-finding panel from the Federal Ministry of Health. This recommendation was based on allegations of mismanagement involving a sum of N919 million.
At the time of writing, the EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, had been contacted for comment but had not provided further information.
