Edo: Shaibu Makes First Official Appearance, Reacts To Alleged Rift Between Him and Obaseki
Edo State’s Deputy Governor, Comrade Phillip Shaibu, marked his first official appearance following recent political tensions and expressed his allegiance to Governor Godwin Obaseki. The commitment was made during an interdenominational thanksgiving service held to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of Edo State’s creation.
Addressing the congregation at the New Festival Hall in Government House, Benin City, Shaibu refrained from discussing the differences that had surfaced in the media between him and Governor Obaseki. He maintained that any disagreements should be resolved privately, emphasizing his regard for Obaseki as an elder brother and leader.
The deputy governor’s absence from the state in recent weeks and the public discourse surrounding their differences have raised questions. Notably, Governor Obaseki expressed surprise and accused Shaibu of plotting against him.
During the event, Shaibu stated, “My loyalty to the governor remains absolute. I see that everybody is doing solidarity. I am also in solidarity with the governor. I am also declaring my unalloyed solidarity and loyalty to the governor and nothing more.”
He further clarified that while he holds personal ambitions, these aspirations would not undermine his dedication and loyalty to Governor Obaseki. Citing his Christian background, Shaibu affirmed his commitment to support Obaseki’s governance throughout his term.
Governor Obaseki, speaking at the service, acknowledged the challenging times the nation faces but encouraged Nigerians to maintain hope and belief in the country’s potential for transformation. He underlined the importance of unity and innovation in building a thriving state.
As Edo State stands at the threshold of transformation, Obaseki expressed his appreciation for the support and urged citizens to uphold the shared vision for a prosperous future. He quoted Psalms 24:1-2, emphasizing the divine foundation upon which progress is built.
The governor concluded with an optimistic outlook, stating, “Today marks a pivotal movement in our journey… the dawn of this new era has unveiled a horizon of limitless possibilities. It is both a responsibility and privilege to grasp this opportunity with unyielding determination.”
Obaseki’s words emphasized the collective effort required to shape the destiny of the state, highlighting the significance of innovation and unity in achieving progress and prosperity
