Edo Labour Party Rift Widens: Akpata Faction Suspends Chieftain Over Ighodalo Endorsement

The Labour Party in Edo State finds itself embroiled in a deepening crisis as the Akpata faction moves to suspend one of its prominent chieftains, Chief Lucky Ibadin. The suspension comes in the wake of Chief Ibadin’s endorsement of frontline PDP governorship candidate Barr. Asue Ighodalo, sparking allegations of anti-party activities.

Five local government chairmen, namely Comrades Aigberaedion, Onogbenin, Agboga, Eseigbe, and Ikoko, have reportedly signed a letter circulating in WhatsApp groups, announcing the indefinite suspension of Chief Ibadin. They claim to be acting as custodians of the party and its constitution. However, scrutiny of the Labour Party constitution casts doubt on their authority, as the Edo Central LGA chairmen are not recognized as a caucus within the party with the power to unilaterally discipline members.

Article 20 1.a of the Labour Party constitution explicitly states that disciplinary actions against party members should be handled through respective disciplinary committees at the appropriate level, ensuring due process and fair hearing.

Chief Ibadin’s endorsement of Barr. Asue Ighodalo on Friday, citing competence and advocating for representation from Edo Central in the gubernatorial race, has exacerbated tensions within the party. Chief Ibadin, known for his influence as an Obidient figure, emphasized the importance of justice, fairness, and equity in the selection of the next governor.

The endorsement has further intensified the existing rift within the Labour Party, particularly considering that Olumide Akpata, the party’s candidate, hails from the same local government in Edo South as the incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki. As Edo Decides 2024 draws nearer, the internal discord within the Labour Party poses significant challenges for the party’s prospects in the upcoming election.
