Edo Gubernatorial Election: IGP Orders Arrest of Spy Policeman for Threatening Governor Obaseki, Ighodalo in Viral Video
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has directed the arrest of a Spy Policeman who appeared in a viral video urging voters to reject the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo.
The video, which has gained significant attention, features the Spy Policeman in uniform criticizing both the current Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and Ighodalo, accusing them of crimes against the people of Edo State. He urged voters to use the election as an opportunity to “fight back” against what he described as betrayals of democracy and mismanagement of resources.
In response to the video, the Nigeria Police Force issued a statement condemning the remarks. Force Spokesman Olumuyiwa Adesjobi clarified that the individual in question is a Supernumerary (Spy) Police Officer, not a regular member of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). Unlike regular officers, Spy Policemen are not on the NPF payroll and do not take an oath of allegiance, allowing them the freedom to engage in political activities.
However, the statement criticized the use of the Spy uniform for political purposes and confirmed that the officer has been arrested for further investigation.
