ECOWAS Responds to Senegal’s President Sall’s Postponement of Presidential Election
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called on Senegal to expedite necessary procedures and establish a new date for its presidential poll. This plea comes in response to Senegalese President Macky Sall’s decision to indefinitely postpone the country’s presidential election, citing controversies surrounding the 20 candidates vying for his position.
In an official statement released on Saturday, ECOWAS expressed its concern about the circumstances leading to the election’s delay and urged all stakeholders to engage in dialogue, emphasizing the need for “transparent, inclusive, and credible elections.”
“The ECOWAS Commission expresses concern over the circumstances that have led to the postponement of the elections and appeals to the competent authorities to expedite the various processes in order to set a new date for the elections,” the statement reads.
The Commission further urged the entire political class to prioritize dialogue and collaboration, emphasizing the importance of transparent, inclusive, and credible elections. Acknowledging President Macky Sall’s decision not to seek another term, ECOWAS commended him for upholding Senegal’s long-standing democratic tradition and encouraged him to continue defending and protecting it.
The statement concluded with ECOWAS committing to monitoring the situation in Senegal closely. The international community awaits Senegal’s prompt actions to ensure a timely and transparent electoral process.
