Ebonyi Government Announces Plans to Launch State Airline

The Ebonyi State Government has revealed plans to establish a state-owned airline to enhance air transportation in the region. This move is part of the ongoing development efforts at the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport in Abakiliki.

The announcement came from Dr. Ngozi Obichukwu, the Commissioner for Aviation and Transport Technology, during a recent press briefing at her office in Onueke. Dr. Obichukwu, who had just completed an inspection tour of the airport, stated that the airline would be launched once the runway asphalting at Chuba Okadigbo International Airport is completed. She projected that the airport would be fully operational by August.

Dr. Obichukwu praised Governor Francis Nwifuru, former governor David Umahi, and the engineering teams on-site for their collaborative efforts to ensure the timely completion of the airport project. She noted that the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport has already begun to welcome flights, demonstrating significant progress.

“Before the asphalting, we’ve already seen flights coming in,” Dr. Obichukwu remarked. She highlighted the dual-purpose nature of the airport, emphasizing that it is designed to handle both human and cargo transportation. The airport is set to play a crucial role in exporting goods produced in Ebonyi, including rice, garri, and salt.

In response to questions about whether the runway would be completed by May, Dr. Obichukwu was confident about the progress made, stating, “With your eyes and senses, you can see what we’ve done and the extent we’ve gone.”

The commissioner emphasized that the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport would not only be a key transportation hub but also a significant economic driver for the South East region. “It will not only be a beehive of activities but also an economic hub, as many people will benefit from the operations here,” she said, pointing out that the airport will attract travelers from Abia, Enugu, Anambra, and parts of Cross River.
