Ebonyi Approves N90,000 Minimum Wage for Civil Servants
The Ebonyi State Government has approved an increase in the minimum wage for civil servants from N70,000 to N90,000. Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Ikeuwa Omebe, announced the decision on Thursday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting.
Omebe said the upward review takes immediate effect and applies to all categories of the state’s workforce. He stressed that the decision was not politically motivated but a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare. According to him, the government has already cleared pension and gratuity arrears of retirees dating back to the creation of the state in 1996. He added that the verification process for local government retirees is ongoing, after which payments will commence.
The commissioner noted that if the government had fulfilled such significant financial obligations in the past, it would not shy away from honoring the additional N20,000 increment to workers. He described Governor Francis Nwifuru as a leader committed to building both human capacity and infrastructure, guided by the principle of the “people’s charter of needs.”
Omebe further disclosed that the council also approved the implementation of the eight-year tenure policy for directors, which mandates the immediate retirement of permanent secretaries and directors who have completed the stipulated period in office.
