DSS Operatives Surround SERAP Office in Abuja Following Ajaero’s Arrest

 

 

In a developing situation in Abuja, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have reportedly surrounded the office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP). This incident occurred shortly after the arrest of Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), by the DSS.

 

While specific details regarding the siege remain unclear, SERAP disclosed via its official X (formerly Twitter) account that DSS personnel had unlawfully taken position at their office and were demanding to meet with the organization’s directors.

 

“Officers from Nigeria’s State Security Service (SSS) are currently occupying SERAP’s office in Abuja, insisting on seeing our directors,” the post read.

 

SERAP further called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, urging him to instruct the DSS to stop the “harassment, intimidation, and attack on the rights of Nigerians.”

 

This development follows SERAP’s recent open letter to President Tinubu, issued on September 7, 2024, urging him to reverse the recent hike in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). The organization argued that the increase violated constitutional rights and international human rights obligations, demanding immediate action from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
