Dozens Feared Killed as Gunmen Launch Deadly Attack on Nawfia Community, Anambra State
Dozens of residents are feared dead following a violent attack by unknown gunmen near Afor Market Junction in Nawfia community, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday. The attackers reportedly arrived suddenly and opened fire on people in the area, leaving the community in shock and panic.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as victims were struck by gunfire while others fled for their lives. Video footage circulating online showed individuals running in different directions, with some lifeless bodies lying in pools of blood near the market. One resident said, “It was commando-like; the attackers came from nowhere and began shooting indiscriminately. Many were killed before anyone could respond.”
Chief Daniel Okoye, President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, confirmed the incident in a press statement, describing it as a tragic and senseless act of violence. He said relevant security agencies had been contacted and investigations were already underway to identify and apprehend those responsible. “I appeal to all Ndi Nawfia to remain calm, stay vigilant, and cooperate with security operatives,” he said. “Our thoughts are with the families affected, and we are committed to supporting efforts to restore safety and peace in the community.”
A police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said law enforcement officers have launched a thorough investigation and are working to bring the perpetrators to justice. The Anambra State Police Command’s Spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, could not be reached for confirmation.
Residents are calling for a stronger security presence to prevent further incidents, expressing deep concern for the safety of their families and neighbors. The scale of the casualties remains uncertain as authorities continue to assess the situation.
