Disquiet Grows in Obi-Datti Coalition Over Peter Obi’s Visit to Bauchi Governor

Tension is simmering within the Obi-Datti Coalition and the wider Obidient Movement in Bauchi State following a recent visit by Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the state governor, Senator Bala Mohammed. The closed-door meeting, held between Obi and the Bauchi Governor—who also chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum—sparked discontent among local coalition members who said they were completely sidelined during and after the engagement.

Although details of the meeting remain under wraps, both parties later suggested it was part of broader consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, the absence of any form of communication or involvement with the local Obidient leadership has not gone unnoticed, with the group expressing concern that their contributions are being overlooked.

Elder Abel Musa, chairman of the coalition in Bauchi, addressed journalists on the matter, criticizing what he described as a lack of consultation. He noted that the Obidient Movement played a significant role in mobilizing support during the 2023 elections and has remained active in pushing for reform across Nigeria. According to Musa, being excluded from such a politically significant visit was disheartening and damaging to the morale of members.

He further dismissed claims that Obi’s visit was private, pointing out that the meeting was covered extensively by both mainstream and social media, including a public Q&A session. “The assertion that His Excellency’s visit was in a personal capacity is misleading. He’s not just a private citizen,” Musa said.

The visit came just days after the North East Obidient Movement Summit, in which Bauchi members had played a central role in planning and participation. Musa called the timing of the visit particularly insensitive, saying it undermines the efforts and dedication of those working at the grassroots level.

Despite the frustration among members, Musa praised coordinators and stakeholders for handling the situation with restraint and urged continued focus on the group’s goals. He appealed to Peter Obi and his team to revisit their approach and ensure that the movement’s state chapters are actively involved in future engagements.

He emphasized that collaboration and inclusivity are essential to sustaining the enthusiasm of the movement and keeping alive the shared vision of a new Nigeria.
