DHQ Reveals Those Behind Increased Terror Attacks in Northeast, Northwest Nigeria

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has attributed the recent rise in terrorist attacks in Nigeria’s Northeast and Northwest to the infiltration of foreign fighters. These foreign elements, coming from the Sahel region, are reinforcing terrorist groups and working alongside local informants, according to Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Buba stated that local collaborators provide critical intelligence to terrorists, particularly regarding military operations and troop movements. Despite this challenge, he reassured the public that the military remains committed to dismantling terrorist networks and restoring peace in affected regions.

“The resurgence in terror attacks is linked to the influx of foreign fighters who have joined these groups as reinforcements. They receive support from local informants who provide information about our troop movements,” Buba explained. “Despite occasional setbacks, our objective remains clear: to weaken and eventually destroy the terrorists’ will to fight.”

He detailed ongoing military efforts, revealing that in the past week alone, troops had neutralized 156 terrorists, arrested 464 individuals for various crimes, and rescued 181 kidnapped victims. Additionally, security forces confiscated 219 high-caliber weapons and 2,871 rounds of ammunition.

In the Niger Delta, military operations led to the destruction of 46 illegal refining sites, 56 storage tanks, and 48 crude oil cooking ovens. Troops also seized 705,294 liters of stolen crude oil, 6,865 liters of illegally refined diesel, and several other petroleum products. Various equipment used in illegal operations, including boats, motorcycles, and vehicles, were also recovered.

Meanwhile, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has warned residents in farming and fishing communities in Baga against collaborating with insurgents. Addressing community members at the palace of the District Head, Zulum emphasized that such actions undermine efforts to maintain stability in the region. He urged residents to conduct their activities only in areas authorized by the military.

Similarly, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda condemned the recent attack on Kankara General Hospital by armed bandits. He assured healthcare workers and residents that his administration remains committed to their safety and will take decisive action against criminals disrupting medical services.

In Sokoto State, a military operation targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group in Gudu led to the elimination of six terrorists. However, five soldiers lost their lives during the operation.

The United Nations has also reacted to the violence, with UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, calling for accountability. He described the attacks as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by civilians in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states.

Amid the growing security concerns, Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle has reiterated the need for increased military funding. While defending the ministry’s 2025 budget proposal before the National Assembly, Matawalle stressed that modern equipment is essential to effectively combat terrorism and banditry in the country.
