Destiny Boy, Fuji Singer and Former Pasuma Backup Dancer, Dies at 22

Nigerian singer Destiny Boy has died at the age of 22.

News of his death emerged on Sunday following the circulation of videos on social media showing his body being conveyed to a mortuary. The footage triggered widespread reactions and speculation over the circumstances surrounding his passing.

In one of the videos, the singer was seen lying in the back of a vehicle with cotton wool placed in his nostrils and ears. Unverified accounts from individuals said to be close to the situation claimed he vomited blood shortly before his death.

Another video, recorded by an unidentified associate, attempted to address the speculation. The man stated that Destiny Boy had been dealing with an undisclosed health condition prior to his death.

“People should not spread false information about his death,” he said. “Destiny had been battling a health issue. We did everything we could, but he didn’t survive.”

Born Afeez Adeshina, Destiny Boy began his music career at an early age and became known for blending Fuji with contemporary sounds. He started out at T2 Boys Studios in Agege, Lagos, where he worked as a backup dancer for Fuji musician Pasuma.

He gained national attention in 2019 after releasing a Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit song If, which gained wide attention online. He later released covers of songs by Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice, and Small Doctor.

His original works include Lamba, One Transaction, Gbese, Billion Dollar, Mio Gbonkankan, and Lowkey.

Destiny Boy is survived by his partner, Iremide, and their child, born in November 2024.
