Deposed Emir Conducts Ceremonial Sitting in Kano Mini Palace
In a significant display of royal tradition and defiance, the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, held his first ceremonial sitting on Monday at the Nasarawa Mini Palace. This event comes amid ongoing legal battles following his dethronement. Bayero, dressed in full royal regalia, received homage from supporters and district heads, underscoring his continued claim to the throne.
The situation in Kano has become increasingly complex with Muhammad Sanusi II’s reinstatement by the Kano State Government. For the first time in the state’s history, Kano finds itself with two claimants to the emirate, each conducting ceremonial duties.
Sanusi, reinstated by Governor Abba Yusuf under the newly signed Kano State Emirates Council Law, has resumed his role at the Main Palace, receiving homage from 40 out of 65 district heads. The power struggle has plunged the state into controversy, especially after Governor Yusuf ordered five emirs, including Bayero, to vacate their palaces within 48 hours.
Tensions escalated further when Bayero’s supporters took to the streets on Sunday, lighting bonfires and chanting anti-government slogans. The state police command, led by Commissioner CP Muhammad Usaini Gumel, has vowed to enforce a court order preventing Sanusi’s reinstatement until a substantive case is resolved. Security has been heightened around both palaces, with Bayero protected by heavy police presence and Sanusi by vigilantes and local hunters.
At a press conference, CP Gumel disclosed that security agencies had uncovered plans by miscreants to attack the State House of Assembly and other strategic locations. He called for vigilance and calm as authorities strive to maintain order amidst the royal turmoil.
