Defiant Plateau PDP Lawmakers Vow to Return to Plenary Following Supreme Court Ruling
In a determined stand against the November Court of Appeal ruling that ousted sixteen members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from the Plateau State House of Assembly, the lawmakers are resolute in their decision to reconvene the assembly on Tuesday, January 24.
Speaking to the press in Jos on Monday, the lawmakers asserted that the recent Supreme Court verdict, upholding Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s victory, has not only affirmed the governor’s triumph but also exonerated them from pre-election allegations.
The Court of Appeal’s decision last November not only affected the 16 members of the Plateau State House of Assembly but also ousted five members of the House of Representatives and two senators, all affiliated with the PDP. Notably, Governor Mutfwang’s election was initially challenged but later validated by the Supreme Court, which criticized the Appeal Court’s ruling as a miscarriage of justice.
Characterizing the Appeal Court’s judgment as a deliberate attempt to undermine the people’s will, the PDP lawmakers emphasized their readiness to resume plenary on Tuesday, accompanied by constituents who share their concerns. Despite having filed a legal action on the matter, they called on Governor Caleb Mutfwang not to yield to any pressure that might lead to interference in the legislative affairs of the house.
