Ignore the smile on my face, I WANT TO RANT!!!

In my school here, UCL, we were reviewing an optional course to see if other students will be adviced to take it next year.

Majority said no one should take the course BECAUSE the class is LARGE and does not allow effective learning.

This is a class that seats about 150 students; about 6 persons per group sitting. This class has a public address system, has projector, has averagly 3 staff present, about 20 students assigned to a LECTURER for individual tutorials AND has 24hours power supply plus NATURAL COLD.

I WEPT!

In GS 101 course I did in NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY in 2009, all year 1 in science faculty and management faculty (about 1,000 human beings) learnt in MPH with ONE LECTURER, without power or sound system or projector or GOOD VENTILATION.

MAT 101 and other general courses had like hundreds of students in a SMALL class.

What is the student/Teacher ratio? How can students get individual or group feedback for anything? How can learning be monitored?

I don’t even want to talk about out curriculum and other issues.

Today, I want to thank ALL Nigerian lecturers. The educational system was not designed that YOUR CLASS should EDUCATE students.

Coming to teach in such a condition is unthinkable and CRUEL.

And schools who put students in such situations SHOULDN’T EXIST.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS TO INVEST IN EDUCATION.

TELL THE PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPULIC OF NIGERIA THAT.

I DON’T KNOW IF WE HAVE EVER HAD OR EVEN HAVE A REAL MINISTER FOR EDUCATION WHO IS AN EDUCATIONIST OR INTERESTED IN EDUCATION BECAUSE I CAN’T SEE ANY WORK DONE.

Cynthia
