“Customers to Get N20bn Meter Refunds from DisCos” — NERC
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has ordered electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to pay N20.33 billion in outstanding meter reimbursements to customers under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) framework.
The commission directed that the total amount be recovered and fully disbursed over 12 months starting March 1, 2026. Under the MAP scheme, customers pay for meters upfront and receive refunds through energy credits. NERC said delays in reimbursements over the years necessitated the new order.
Signed on February 27, 2026, Order No. NERC/2026/025 amends a 2023 directive on meter reimbursements. As of December 31, 2025, DisCos had not reimbursed customers, leaving N20.33 billion in arrears.
The order requires reimbursements to be automatically credited to customer accounts. Prepaid customers will receive monthly tokens, while postpaid customers will see distinct credit lines on their bills. Credits cannot be offset against existing debts.
To accelerate repayment, prepaid customers will get two tokens per month, and postpaid customers will see two reimbursement entries. DisCos must submit monthly compliance reports and provide a dedicated complaints channel for customers.
NERC said the measures aim to prevent delays, improve transparency, and strengthen confidence in the electricity sector.
