AEDC Promises Stable Power in Four States by 2027

Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has announced plans to eliminate blackouts and minimize electricity interruptions in the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kogi, and Nassarawa states by 2027.

Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, AEDC’s Chief Executive, made the announcement during a stakeholder engagement in Abuja on Thursday.

The company attributed recent nationwide power fluctuations to reduced supply from the national grid amid seasonal challenges. To strengthen supply in Abuja and surrounding areas, AEDC plans to leverage the ongoing 350-megawatt gas plant by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company in Gwagwalada, expected to come online by the end of this year or early next year.

Okwuokenye highlighted infrastructure improvements aimed at increasing reliability. “We are constructing a new feeder to Wuse starting the second week of March. Customers in Wuse and Idu can expect up to 20 hours of power supply,” he said, adding that these efforts are backed by the board, shareholders, and government.

He also raised concerns about electricity theft, describing it as a major challenge nationwide, and called for greater cooperation from consumers to curb the issue.

On sector reforms, Okwuokenye urged a review of the current tariff structure to address the liquidity challenges facing the power industry. He further noted that AEDC has deployed 70,000 meters under the national free-meter scheme to improve service delivery.
