“Current Administration Has Fared Worse, Committed Impeachable Infractions” — El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has criticised the federal government’s performance, saying it has fallen far below expectations, particularly in security and governance.

Speaking on *ARISE TV Prime Time*, El-Rufai said the country’s situation has deteriorated beyond what he envisaged during the 2022–2023 election period. “If you asked me in 2022 or 2023 when we were campaigning that things would ever be this bad, I would say that you are mentally ill,” he said.

El-Rufai also raised concerns about the handling of public funds, alleging that about $100 billion is deducted monthly from the Federation Account without proper legislative approval. He said these deductions occur without appropriation by either the National Assembly or state assemblies, despite a portion of the funds belonging to the states.

Citing official government data, he said the practice violates constitutional provisions and amounts to an impeachable offence. “So the entire deduction and expenditure is unconstitutional. It’s an impeachable offense,” El-Rufai said, noting that the alleged mismanagement has continued for over 15 months.

He questioned the use of the funds, estimating that around $1.5 trillion may have been spent without adequate accountability, and linked the spending to the worsening security situation. “Why is the security situation just getting worse? Why is the government asking communities to protect themselves?” he asked.

El-Rufai concluded that, in his view, the current administration has performed worse than expected.
