Cristiano Ronaldo Faces Suspension for 2026 World Cup Opener
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo is at risk of missing the opening match of the 2026 World Cup following a red card in Thursday’s 2-0 loss to the Republic of Ireland.
The 40-year-old was initially shown a yellow card in the 61st minute for elbowing Ireland defender Dara O’Shea. However, after a VAR review, the referee upgraded the decision to a red card, marking Ronaldo’s first dismissal in his 226th international appearance.
Under FIFA disciplinary rules, Ronaldo faces a mandatory one-match suspension in competitive fixtures. Rules for violent conduct indicate a ban could extend to “at least three matches or an appropriate period of time for assault, including elbowing.” The suspension would apply to official competitive matches, not pre-tournament friendlies.
