Crisis Escalates: Fr Mbaka Fumes Over Nsukka Catholic Bishop vs. Fr Okunerere Clash
The ongoing dispute between the Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Rt Rev Godfrey Onah, and Rev Fr Paul Obayi, known as Fr Okunerere, has ignited a firestorm of reactions. Fr Okunerere serves as the spiritual director of the Okunerere Adoration Ministry in Nsukka, Enugu State.
As previously reported, Fr Okunerere accused the church authorities in the diocese of oppressing him, despite his dedicated service to the church. He declared his intention to leave the Catholic Church, citing perceived mistreatment.
This controversy has sparked widespread debate on social media, with varying opinions on the matter. Notably, Father Mbaka, known for his outspoken nature, has joined the fray, issuing a stern warning to those allegedly oppressing Fr Okunerere.
Mbaka emphasized that those involved in the situation should desist from their actions or face the consequences, which he referred to as ‘sin against the Holy Spirit.’ He urged that Fr Okunerere should be protected from any perceived threats and negative influences.
In a veiled reference to the Bishop, Mbaka questioned the motives behind the actions against Fr Okunerere, cautioning against baseless accusations. He encouraged those involved to refrain from overstepping their boundaries, reminding them that they are not above God’s judgment.
Mbaka went on to express his concern for the well-being of priests who may face similar hardships, emphasizing the need for support and protection within the Catholic Church. He called for the preservation of priests like Fr Okunerere, who dedicate themselves to winning souls for God.
He also voiced his concerns about the challenges faced by the Catholic Church in retaining its members, highlighting the need for charismatic and soul-winning priests to bring back those who have strayed to other denominations.
Mbaka concluded his statement by warning against the mistreatment of men of God, reminding all involved to respect the boundaries of their actions and not incur the wrath of heaven.
This development follows previous conflicts between Father Mbaka and the Enugu Catholic Bishop, Most Rev Callistus Onaga, over the activities of the Adoration Ministry. The tensions peaked in June 2022 when the Ministry was temporarily shut down on the Bishop’s order, citing concerns about the compatibility of some of Fr. Mbaka’s teachings with Catholic doctrine. This episode was triggered by Mbaka’s comments about the then-presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
Mbaka’s followers strongly opposed this decision, leading to a temporary suspension of his ministry’s activities. However, in January of the current year, Father Mbaka was allowed to resume his ministry.
The ongoing clash between the clergy and the Bishop underscores the deep divisions and controversies within the Catholic Church in the Nsukka region.
