Crisis Deepens at Edo University Uzairue as Suspended Acting VC, Registrar Allegedly Defy Suspension Orders

Edo State University Uzairue is currently grappling with an administrative crisis as the suspended Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dawood Egbefo, and Registrar, Mr. Habib Ekhalefo, have allegedly refused to vacate their positions despite their suspension by the university’s Governing Council over allegations of corruption and misconduct.

Staff members, deeply concerned about the impact of the crisis on the institution, have written to Governor Monday Okpebholo, seeking his urgent intervention. In their letter, they outlined the alleged actions of the suspended officials, which include defying the suspension directives issued on November 4, 2024, and continuing to oversee university operations in violation of the Council’s orders.

The allegations against the officials include financial impropriety, contract splitting, and disregard for institutional guidelines. The letter, also copied to key state officials such as the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and the Attorney General, details how the suspended duo have held unauthorized meetings and made decisions that have worsened the tension on campus.

According to the petition, the refusal to comply with the suspension has created a climate of fear within the university. Staff members have reportedly faced threats and intimidation, including being targeted with spurious disciplinary measures for following the Council’s instructions. The suspended officials are accused of withholding salaries, issuing unwarranted queries, and setting up what staff describe as “Kangaroo Disciplinary Committees” to punish dissenters.

The crisis has also reportedly disrupted key administrative processes, such as staff promotions. Approved promotions have allegedly been blocked by the suspended officials, who are accused of stifling the advancement of employees perceived as unsupportive of their actions. Additionally, the Acting Vice Chancellor is alleged to have made nearly 100 appointments without following due process, with efforts underway to confirm these appointments before further scrutiny.

The staff members warned of the dire consequences if the situation is not addressed promptly, including the potential loss of valuable academic personnel who are already leaving the institution. They urged Governor Okpebholo to take decisive action to enforce the suspension orders and restore order at the university.

In their appeal, the staff expressed confidence in the governor’s ability to address the crisis and ensure that Edo State University Uzairue continues its mission of becoming a world-class center for learning.
