Cracks Emerge in Gov. Fubara’s Support Over Caretaker Chairman Appointments
Barely two weeks after appointing caretaker committee chairmen for the 23 local government councils in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara faces a significant challenge as cracks emerge within his support base. The controversy centers around the selection of certain chairmen, which has sparked discontent among various factions.
The Ogoni Liberation Alliance (OLA) raised concerns on Thursday, alleging that Governor Fubara’s decisions could undermine his support and potentially benefit supporters of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike within the state. The group claims that many appointees are “political jobbers” rather than the people’s true choices.
Barieeba Marcus Nwile, President of OLA, criticized the appointment process, accusing the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie, of pushing through candidates without considering public preference. He cited the appointment of Marvin Yobana in Khana LGA as particularly contentious, suggesting it did not reflect the people’s wishes.
Nwile warned that the situation in Khana LGA, where Yobana is poised for another term following the October 5 council elections, has angered many. This decision, he claimed, neglects established zoning arrangements and risks causing significant dissent within Governor Fubara’s support base, especially within his senatorial district.
Nwile emphasized that the Governor’s handling of this issue will test his political acumen and ability to govern effectively. He also highlighted dissatisfaction among those who feel sidelined despite their efforts for the government, as appointments seem to favor those with connections rather than those who have actively supported Fubara.
The OLA President urged Governor Fubara to prioritize the people’s interests over cronyism and adhere to established zoning arrangements to maintain stability and support within the state.
