Court Dissolves Marriage After Wife Files for Divorce Due to Husband’s Financial Struggles

An Area Court in Centre-Igboro, Ilorin, has officially dissolved the Islamic marriage between Toyin Ajibola and Bashirat Mohammed due to financial issues.

Presiding Judge Hammad Ajumonbi ruled that while Mr. Ajibola still loved his wife, she had the right to move on, citing the strain caused by his inability to provide financially. The court granted custody of the couple’s three children to Ms. Mohammed, with a stipulation that she observe the mandatory three-month iddah (waiting period) before remarrying.

In his judgment, Judge Ajumonbi ordered Mr. Ajibola to contribute to the children’s feeding within his financial capacity and emphasized that he should have unrestricted access to them. The mother was instructed to ensure that the children are available whenever their father wishes to see them.

Ms. Mohammed had sought divorce, citing her husband’s financial difficulties and lack of responsibility. “I want the court to grant me a divorce so I can have peace of mind,” she told the court.

In response, Mr. Ajibola expressed his continued affection for his wife but admitted that his financial struggles had prevented him from adequately supporting his family. “I’ve tried hard to provide for them, but I haven’t been able to. It’s painful that I can’t even afford to visit my children,” he lamented.
