Court Dismisses Suit Seeking to Sack PDP Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum
The Katsina State High Court has dismissed a lawsuit seeking to remove Umar Iliya Damagum as the National Chairman of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). The suit was brought by Ibrahim Musa, a PDP member, who argued that Damagum’s appointment violated the party’s constitution.
Musa contended that Damagum, who replaced former chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, should have been chosen from the North-Central geopolitical zone, Ayu’s home region. However, Justice Abdullahi Bawa-Faskari ruled that the matter fell within the internal affairs of the party, deeming it outside the court’s jurisdiction.
In his judgment, Justice Bawa-Faskari upheld the objections raised by the defendants, ruling the case “not justiciable” and reaffirming that issues related to party leadership are for the PDP to resolve internally.
