Court Admits Radio Biafra Transmitter Video as Evidence in Nnamdi Kanu’s Terrorism Trial
In a major development in the ongoing terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the Federal High Court in Abuja has admitted video evidence, including a clip allegedly showing Kanu inspecting a Radio Biafra transmitter said to have been smuggled into Nigeria. The footage, presented by the prosecution, forms part of the case alleging that Kanu used the transmitter to incite violence and promote secessionist activities.
At Wednesday’s hearing, a Department of State Services (DSS) officer testified that Kanu made both written and video-recorded statements in 2015, all of which were admitted into evidence. However, Kanu’s legal team challenged the validity of those statements, claiming they were made under duress while he was held in solitary confinement and denied access to legal representation.
Justice Omotosho ordered a trial within trial to assess the voluntariness of the statements. Kanu, testifying as a defense witness, alleged coercion and mistreatment by DSS officials, claims which the prosecution denies. The judge is expected to rule on the admissibility of the contested statements on May 29.
