Couple Burnt to Death Over Alleged Motorcycle Theft in Imo State
A tragic incident occurred in Orogwe, Ohii axis of Owerri-West LGA, Imo State, where a yet-to-be-identified couple was reportedly burnt to death by a group of enraged youths.
According to local sources, the couple, who had allegedly been involved in motorcycle theft, was apprehended on Monday while attempting to steal a motorcycle at gunpoint. The couple, known within the community for their illicit activities, was reportedly caught red-handed after robbing a motorcyclist.
Residents, already frustrated by a spate of motorcycle thefts in the area, decided to take matters into their own hands, refusing to turn the suspects over to the police. The source noted, “The couple was notorious in the community, but their criminal activities were only discovered today. The community had been on high alert due to the rising thefts.”
Despite attempts to intervene, the situation escalated, leading to the couple’s bodies being set alight on the Orogwe/Ohii road. The motive behind the community’s decision to bypass legal channels remains unclear, as it is also unknown if the couple was from the local area.
When contacted, Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, confirmed that the command had not yet been briefed on the incident.
