Corps Member Ushie Uguamaye Apologises for ‘Talking Down on Lagos’ After Viral Video
Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Lagos, has apologised following widespread reactions to a viral video in which she strongly criticised the government and living conditions in the state.
In the video, Uguamaye referred to President Bola Tinubu as a “terrible leader” and expressed deep frustration over the country’s economic challenges. She also questioned the relevance of the NYSC scheme and described life in Lagos as difficult, drawing backlash from government supporters, NYSC officials, and residents of the state.
Responding to the outrage, Uguamaye issued a statement clarifying her remarks, saying some of her comments were misunderstood and apologising for “talking down on Lagos.”
“I’m sorry for those born and raised in Lagos state if you feel offended by what I said. But as a visitor here, I could tell there was a difference in the atmosphere and air quality,” she wrote.
She emphasised that her criticisms were based on real struggles, especially the inability to afford leisure despite long work hours. “I work 45+ hours a week and should be able to afford to hang out with my friends every weekend. However, I can’t. You spend all week working and can’t even feel alive on the weekends.”
While standing by the substance of her message, Uguamaye said it was never her intention to insult Lagosians. She encouraged Nigerians to continue demanding better living conditions. “The complaints I made are valid, regardless of whatever lifestyle you think I’m living… I encourage all of us to ask for what we believe we deserve. I know distractions will take us again very soon. But if we stay committed to asking for better, we will get better.”
