Coronavirus: WHO quells rumour of mutated strain resistance to vaccine

The World Health Organization, WHO, has stated that no empirical evidence has shown that the new strain of the coronavirus disease, recorded in South Africa and a few other Southern African countries, is resistant to any of the Coronavirus vaccines currently in circulation.

The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti, who made this known while speaking at the first online COVID-19 media briefing of the Africa region on Thursday, also stated that the continent was spared of much of the adverse effects of the deadly virus with a relatively lower number of Infections as compared to what occurred in other parts of the world.

Dr. Moeti who spoke during the virtual press conference, facilitated by the APO Group l, was joined by Professor Francisca Mutapi of the University of Edinburgh, the UK, and Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC.
