Controversy Surrounds Death of Catholic Priest Allegedly Killed by Lightning Strike

Reverend Father Faustinus Gundu, the Parish Priest of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jootar, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, has lost his life under controversial circumstances. Local reports, yet to be officially verified, suggest that Father Faustinus Gundu met a tragic end, with conflicting accounts of the incident.

One version of the story circulating in the community alleges that the priest, affectionately known as “Albino” by the locals, was struck by lightning during a rainstorm on a fateful Thursday. Another account claims that he suddenly slumped and passed away. Eyewitnesses have offered a different perspective, stating that the late priest had hurriedly stepped outside his residence to retrieve a towel during the rain but tragically slipped and fell, hitting his head on a hard surface.

Compounding this tragedy was the fact that Father Gundu was alone at the time of the incident, and there was no one available to provide immediate assistance. He remained at the spot where he fell throughout the duration of the rain. It was only after some time that people discovered him and rushed to his aid, but sadly, it was too late.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Benue Command, SP Catherine Anene, has confirmed the incident to the media in Makurdi. However, the circumstances surrounding the priest’s death remain uncertain. SP Catherine Anene explained, “I received the report, but they alleged thunder. It is until we investigate before that can be concluded.”

The mysterious and tragic demise of Reverend Father Faustinus Gundu has left the community in shock and mourning, awaiting further investigation to determine the exact cause of this unfortunate incident.
