Christian Genocide: ‘It Is the Mother of All Betrayals’ — MURIC Slams CAN for ‘Stabbing Tinubu in the Back’
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) of betraying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, despite what the group describes as the President’s generous support for Christians in federal appointments.
The allegation follows United States President Donald Trump’s recent decision to place Nigeria back on the list of “Countries of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged genocide against Christians. MURIC criticized certain Christian leaders for petitioning US authorities about religious killings, which the organization says misrepresents the situation in Nigeria.
Professor Ishaq Akintola, Founder and Executive Director of MURIC, described the CPC redesignation as “a complete misrepresentation of the true picture on the ground in Nigeria.” He claimed that unnamed Christian leaders had sent “frivolous petitions” to the US, portraying Christians as the sole victims of violence, and that CAN had amplified these claims instead of challenging them.
MURIC expressed disappointment with CAN, saying the national body “was expected to know better.” The group argued that the alleged actions were particularly troubling given President Tinubu’s support for Christians, citing that 62% of federal appointments went to Christians and noting the First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, had also been generous to the community.
“CAN’s action is a stab in the back in view of President Tinubu’s preference of Christians in appointments, favours and privileges over and above his Muslim brethren,” MURIC said. The organization condemned the petitions as “the Mother of all Betrayals” and placed responsibility for Nigeria’s CPC designation on those who provided misleading narratives to US authorities, while acknowledging that the US may also be pursuing its own foreign policy interests.
