Chinese Hackers Allegedly Infiltrate Trump’s Phone in Major Security Breach
Chinese hackers have reportedly gained access to the personal cellphones of former U.S. President and current Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, along with his running mate, Senator J.D. Vance. The intrusion, according to campaign sources, marks a major security breach with potential national security implications.
Trump’s campaign was notified this week of the security breach involving Verizon’s telecommunications network, which allegedly exposed the phone numbers and potentially sensitive information of Trump and Vance. While details on the extent of the breach remain limited, experts have suggested that any data linked to a presidential candidate could be of high value to foreign intelligence agencies.
It remains unclear if the hackers successfully accessed text messages or other specific forms of communication, particularly those not encrypted. Sources indicate that the hackers may still have access to Verizon’s systems, though it is unknown if active data extraction is ongoing.
The incident emerges as Trump’s campaign grapples with ongoing cyber threats, including recent phishing attacks allegedly launched by Iranian hackers targeting top campaign officials. These spear-phishing efforts have reportedly succeeded in infiltrating parts of the campaign’s internal communications.
In response to this series of cybersecurity threats, security protocols around Mr. Trump have been bolstered, particularly in light of alleged assassination threats linked to Iran.
Campaign spokesman Steven Cheung has publicly criticized the Biden administration and Vice President Kamala Harris, accusing them of failing to protect the Trump campaign from foreign interference. Cheung’s statement further claimed that these security vulnerabilities reflect broader failings in national cybersecurity under the current administration.
This latest breach also follows a January revelation that a China-affiliated hacking group had infiltrated U.S. telecommunications systems. Security experts warn that this breach, if confirmed, could have profound consequences for U.S. national security as Trump’s campaign moves forward in the final stages of the presidential race.
