Chelsea FC wins 46th edition of UEFA Super Cup
The UEFA Super Cup is an annual football match between the winner of the previous year’s UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.
Chelsea FC of England had beaten Manchester City FC also of England by 1-0 to win the coveted UEFA Champions League trophy, while Villarreal FC of Spain had also cliched the UEFA Europa League title having beaten Manchester United FC of England via a penalty shoot-out.
This year’s edition of the UEFA Super Cup held in the city of Belfast in Northern Ireland.
Hakim Ziyech had put Chelsea in front in the 27th minute of the game.
Chelsea’s lead was cancelled out in the 73rd minute of the match by Gerard Moreno of Villarreal.
The full time ended a goal a-piece.
The match went through a pulsating 30 extra minutes without any side breaking the deadlock.
The Chelsea coach, Thomas Tuchel pulled out his Trump card in the 117th minute of the match, when he brought in goal keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to replace Edouard Mendy.
Kepa was Chelsea’s hero as he saved two penalty kicks taken by Villarreal’s Aissa Mandi and Raul Albiol.
Chelsea FC of England thus becomes the winner of the 46th edition of the UEFA Super Cup.
