Cashier Gets 5-Year Jail Term for Defrauding Employer of N64.4m
In a recent development at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, cashier Tunde Abdulramon has been sentenced to a five-year imprisonment for embezzling N64,420,900 from his employer, Prime Grocers International Limited. The judgment was delivered by Justice Raliat Adebiyi, who also ordered Abdulramon to make full restitution for the misappropriated funds and acquired properties during his tenure.
Abdulramon’s illicit actions, committed between 2009 and 2012, were discovered following an internal audit prompted by suspicions of invoice manipulation. The court heard testimony from multiple witnesses, revealing the cashier’s deceitful practices, including the diversion of substantial customer payments and the alteration of company records.
Constance Obi, the complainant, testified about Abdulramon’s journey within the company, from a casual laborer to a cashier. Her revelation was prompted by an anonymous tip-off alerting her to the cashier’s suspicious acquisitions, leading to the subsequent investigation.
Despite the defendant’s denial of the accusations, Justice Adebiyi found him guilty, highlighting the high level of trust breached and the significant economic loss inflicted on the employer. The judge ruled a concurrent sentence of five years and ordered the disposal of properties procured through the embezzled funds, directing the proceeds to be returned to the complainant.
This case sheds light on the repercussions of internal financial fraud, emphasizing the need for stringent measures to prevent and prosecute such crimes.
