Buhari Hospitalised in London After Falling Ill During Medical Trip
Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is currently hospitalised in London, undergoing treatment after falling ill during a recent medical visit abroad. The 82-year-old, who left office in May 2023 and retired to his hometown of Daura in Katsina State, had initially travelled to the United Kingdom in April for what was described as a routine check-up. However, it has now emerged that his health condition worsened shortly after his arrival.
Garba Shehu, Mr Buhari’s former spokesperson, confirmed the development, explaining that the former leader took ill while in London and has since been receiving medical attention. Although Shehu assured the public that Buhari is responding well to treatment, he declined to disclose the nature of the illness or the name of the hospital where he is being treated.
Buhari’s latest health episode has once again drawn attention to his long history of medical trips to the UK, a pattern that became a defining feature of his presidency. During his time in office, he frequently travelled abroad for medical reasons, with some of the visits lasting several weeks or even months. Notably, he spent 104 consecutive days in London in 2017 during one of his more serious medical episodes.
Since leaving office, Buhari had maintained a relatively low profile in Daura, reportedly enjoying improved health. His current situation, however, marks a concerning turn, especially as there has been no formal statement from the Nigerian government regarding his condition.
As of now, Buhari remains overseas, and while those close to him insist he is recovering well, the lack of detailed information continues to fuel speculation and concern among many Nigerians.
