British Teen Jailed in Dubai Over Romance Dies in London Police Chase Crash
A 19-year-old British teenager who previously made headlines after being jailed in Dubai has died in a car crash following a police pursuit in north London.
Marcus Fakana died in hospital in the early hours of Friday, October 3, after the car he was in failed to stop for police and crashed in Tottenham. The tragic incident occurred just three months after his release from prison in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
According to the Metropolitan Police, officers had tried to stop a “vehicle of interest” on Pretoria Road at about 12:52am. After a brief chase that lasted around a minute, they lost sight of the vehicle. Moments later, police found the car had collided with another vehicle on The Roundway.
Fakana, who was a passenger, suffered severe injuries. Officers administered first aid before paramedics and an air ambulance arrived. He was taken to hospital but died shortly after. His family has been informed.
The driver, identified as 19-year-old Marwaan Mohamed Huseen from Tottenham, survived the crash and was arrested. He has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a licence, and driving without insurance. He appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Saturday and was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on October 30.
Fakana’s death comes only months after he was released from a Dubai prison. He had been arrested in 2024 after entering into a consensual relationship with a 17-year-old British girl while both were on holiday in the UAE. Although the girl was just a few months younger than him, Dubai’s strict laws set the age of consent at 18. Fakana was sentenced to one year in prison before receiving a royal pardon from Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in July this year.
Radha Stirling, founder of the human rights group *Detained in Dubai*, which supported the teenager during his imprisonment, expressed deep sadness at the news. “Marcus spent most of this year in a Dubai prison, which no doubt caused him long-lasting emotional pain. It’s heartbreaking that he was only free for three months—from July 3 to October 3,” she said.
“His loss is a painful reminder of how precious life is and how unnecessary imprisonment robs people of time they can never regain. Every day of freedom matters.”
Tributes have poured in on social media from friends and supporters who described Marcus as a brave young man determined to rebuild his life after his ordeal abroad.
