British Police Investigates Suicide of British-born Nigerian Woman
A tragic incident involving the suicide of Alanis Ogundipe, a British-born Nigerian woman, is currently under investigation by the British Police. It is alleged that Alanis took her own life after being blackmailed by her boyfriend, Ryan Leggetts.
Detective Inspector Jonny Dyer of the Greater Manchester Police provided an update on the ongoing investigation. Dyer confirmed that the police were in contact with the family of the deceased and stated, “The review is still ongoing, and when completed, the family will be updated.”
Alanis, 26 years old at the time, jumped into a moving train at a train station in Manchester on May 29. Prior to her death, it is reported that Leggetts broke into her phone, copied personal documents, and threatened to reveal private information to the public. He also allegedly made financial demands from her.
Alanis’ father, Oladapo Ogundipe, raised concerns about the circumstances leading up to his daughter’s tragic death. He revealed that Leggetts had entered their lives in June 2022 and quickly expressed a desire to marry Alanis. Regarding the financial aspect, Oladapo explained, “We planned to send her £100,000 for a particular investment in the UK. When Ryan perhaps knew about this, he started asking for her bank statements.”
On May 28, Leggetts broke into Alanis’ phone while she was asleep, using the information he obtained to blackmail her. Oladapo further described how Leggetts coerced Alanis into agreeing to pay him the alleged debt. Concerned for his daughter’s safety, Oladapo reached out to Alanis’ mother, Josephine, who met with her daughter on May 28 and witnessed the discussion between Alanis and Leggetts.
Tragically, hours after reluctantly agreeing to Leggetts’ payment terms, Alanis took her own life. Oladapo was unaware of the extent of the situation until after his daughter’s death. Leggetts later shared information detailing how he broke into Alanis’ phone without a password.
Disturbed by the response they received from the Greater Manchester Police, Oladapo expressed his concerns about the investigation. According to him, his wife, who witnessed the conversation between Alanis and Leggetts, had not been interviewed, and Leggetts had not been arrested. The police seemed to base their findings solely on Leggetts’ statement.
Detective Inspector Jonny Dyer recently confirmed the receipt of evidence provided by the Ogundipe family. They are now awaiting the outcome of the review. The British Transport Police also stated that they would review the incident logs related to Alanis’ death. The Ogundipe family hopes that these investigations will shed light on the tragic circumstances surrounding their daughter’s suicide.
