Brave Residents Foil Kidnapping of Pharmacy Owner in Lagos, Capture Suspect

A dramatic rescue unfolded in Oko-Oba, Agege, Lagos, when a four-man gang’s attempt to kidnap a local pharmacy owner was thwarted by vigilant residents. Exclusive footage captures the chaos as residents intervened, leading to the capture of one fleeing suspect.

The gang’s luck ran out when their Honda Acura crashed into a ditch on Ogundele Street, causing alarm among nearby residents. Rushing to the scene, they discovered the occupants were kidnappers who had abducted Samuel Oshanugor, the proprietor of Samtex Pharmacy.

In a swift response, the residents chased the fleeing kidnappers. The gang’s leader, Joseph Yusuf, armed with a pistol, was caught after a relentless pursuit and handed over to the Abattoir Police Division, where he received medical treatment for his injuries.

The gang had meticulously planned the abduction, monitoring Oshanugor until he closed his store. As they attempted to drive off with their victim, the car crashed, and Oshanugor seized the opportunity to escape and raise the alarm.

Exclusive footage shows three gang members arriving separately in the area, pretending to wait for someone. Two were armed with pistols, while Yusuf wielded a machete. He was seen smashing a bench outside the pharmacy while his accomplices captured Oshanugor.

Yusuf later confessed to how the plan was hatched, revealing that he had been deceived into participating in the operation. He stated, “Jamiu Scatter and his younger brother invited me to a party, but it turned out to be a kidnapping plot. I couldn’t handle the gun they gave me and dropped it.”

The gang targeted Oshanugor after one member visited the pharmacy three days earlier. They felt he could afford a ransom. On the day of the abduction, they accosted him as he left his store. Yusuf claimed it was his first time participating in such a crime.

A witness recounted how the loud noise from the crashed car drew residents to the scene. Initially thinking it was an accident, they soon realized it was a kidnapping attempt and chased the suspects, capturing Yusuf.

Oshanugor, 56, detailed his harrowing experience, explaining how the kidnappers accosted him and forced him into his car. His quick thinking and the residents’ swift action saved him. “I thank God and the community for their bravery. My car was damaged, but I am alive, which is what matters most,” he said.

The Lagos State Police Command has yet to respond to inquiries about the case.
