Bolivian General Arrested After Foiled Coup Attempt

Bolivia narrowly escaped a coup attempt led by a high-ranking general, sparking immediate condemnation from President Luis Arce. Armored vehicles descended on the government palace in a bid, as claimed, to restore democracy to the troubled nation.

President Arce swiftly denounced the action, labeling it a direct assault on Bolivia’s democratic institutions. Fortunately, the rebellion was short-lived as the troops quickly withdrew, quelling the immediate threat of instability. This incident adds to Bolivia’s persistent struggles with political volatility and economic uncertainty, according to reports from the Associated Press.

The failed uprising was followed by scenes of celebration among Arce’s supporters, who flooded the palace square in a show of solidarity. They waved flags, sang the national anthem, and cheered as a testament to their loyalty amidst the turmoil.

In a decisive response, Army Chief General Juan José Zúñiga was promptly arrested, along with former Navy Vice Admiral Juan Arnez Salvador, signaling a swift crackdown on the perpetrators. Government Minister Eduardo del Castillo condemned the attempt, stating unequivocally that its aim was to subvert Bolivia’s elected leadership.

“Today’s events were aimed at overturning the democratically elected authority,” del Castillo emphasized in a press briefing following the arrests.

Defense Minister Edmundo Novillo assured the nation later in the day that the situation was under control, flanked by newly appointed military chiefs. He described the episode as a “failed coup,” underscoring the government’s readiness to maintain order and uphold democratic norms.

The attempted coup unfolds against a backdrop of simmering political tensions exacerbated by prolonged disputes between President Arce and his former ally, ex-President Evo Morales. Their power struggle has paralyzed efforts to tackle Bolivia’s severe economic crisis, with legislative stalemates hindering crucial reforms.
