Boko Haram Overruns Nigerian Army Base in Borno, Soldiers Killed, Wounded

Boko Haram insurgents have taken control of a Nigerian Army Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Wajiroko, Borno State, after a coordinated attack that left several soldiers dead and wounded. The attack occurred around 10:00 p.m. on Monday, targeting troops stationed under Operation Hadin Kai and Desert Sanity IV.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the soldiers were unable to repel the assault and fled the base. Reinforcement teams and air support sent by the military command on Monday and Tuesday failed to regain control of the area. At least three soldiers were confirmed dead in the clashes, while three others sustained injuries, including Brigadier General U.F. Abubakar, Lance Corporal Ibrahim Musa, and Private Mohammed Hashim.

Drone footage reviewed by security officials reportedly showed soldiers retreating toward Sabon Gari for safety. Military authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the attack, and Army spokesperson Onyema Nwachukwu did not respond to requests for comment.

This attack comes just days after President Bola Tinubu’s administration celebrated progress in the fight against insurgency. However, the fall of the Wajiroko base underscores the ongoing threat posed by Boko Haram and the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) in northern Nigeria.
