Boko Haram Attacks Nigerian Army Base in Borno, Killing Soldiers, Destroying Military Equipment

Boko Haram militants have launched a deadly attack on a Nigerian Army base in Borno State, leaving several soldiers dead and many others unaccounted for. The assault took place on the morning of Saturday, January 4, 2025, at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Sabon Gari, located in the Damboa Local Government Area.

Security sources report that the terrorists, believed to be linked to both Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), launched the attack around 4 a.m. using a variety of weapons. The assailants set fire to military vehicles and buildings within the base, causing significant destruction. The assault lasted over two hours, during which several soldiers were killed.

A military source confirmed that at least seven bodies have been recovered, but the number of casualties remains uncertain, with many soldiers still missing. The attack is the latest in a series of deadly assaults carried out by the terrorist group, which has increasingly targeted military positions in the region.

Since the death of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, ISWAP has been solidifying its control over areas around Lake Chad. The group’s ranks have swelled as hundreds of former Boko Haram fighters defected to ISWAP, intensifying the threat to the region.

The Nigerian Army has pledged to continue its efforts to combat terrorism in the country, while the Boko Haram insurgency continues to wreak havoc, claiming many lives and displacing millions in the northeast, particularly in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states.
