Benue State Government Issues 14-Day Ultimatum to Herders

The Benue State Security Council, led by Governor Hyacinth Alia, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to herders violating the state’s anti-open grazing law. The council emphasized the necessity for herders to cease rearing their animals outside ranches or face the consequences.

During the security council meeting, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula, announced that a seven-man committee has been formed to enforce the ultimatum, effective from Wednesday, February 21st, 2024. The committee will ensure strict compliance with the state’s Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Law (2017).

Herders recently seen grazing openly in the state were urged to leave immediately, with a stern warning to those who invited them to desist from such actions. The state government emphasized that the anti-open grazing law remains in force and requires strict adherence.

Governor Alia’s administration also called on citizens to remain calm and vigilant, assuring them of efforts to secure lives and property. The Security Council urged cooperation from security agencies, traditional rulers, and the public in reporting and prosecuting individuals collaborating with armed herders entering the state.

Addressing the nation’s hardship and impending food insecurity, the council acknowledged ongoing government initiatives to address these challenges. Benue State, grappling with a prolonged herders/farmers crisis, continues to navigate the complexities exacerbated by the anti-open grazing law implemented in 2017.
