Benue Police Rescue 19 Kidnapped Passengers Along Ohimini–Otukpo Road
Police in Benue State have rescued 19 passengers kidnapped along the Ohimini–Otukpo Road. The abductions occurred in the early hours of December 22 when gunmen set up a roadblock at Mechanic Village and intercepted two commercial vehicles, forcing the passengers into nearby forested areas.
The first vehicle, a Toyota Hiace bus traveling from Oju to Ibadan, carried nine passengers, while a Toyota Hummer bus operated by Plateau Riders Company, heading to Bayelsa State with 11 passengers, was also targeted. The Hummer was driven by Igoche John from Jos, Plateau State.
Following distress calls, police deployed patrol teams and tactical units, conducting extensive searches of the surrounding area. The presence of officers reportedly forced the attackers to abandon the captives, allowing all 19 passengers to be rescued safely without any ransom being paid.
The rescued individuals underwent preliminary questioning and were cleared to continue their journeys. One passenger, Boniface Ndukwe from Jos, Plateau State, is still believed to be held by the kidnappers. Police say operations are ongoing to apprehend the suspects and secure the safe release of the remaining victim.
