Bayelsa Boat Mishap Claims Life of Wrestler Returning from Wedding

The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) is mourning the untimely death of one of its esteemed athletes, John Jerry, who tragically lost his life in a boat accident.

According to the federation’s statement released on Saturday by Promise Okotoko, Media Assistant to the Secretary-General, Mohammed H. Maigidansanma, the unfortunate incident occurred as Jerry was returning from a traditional marriage ceremony in Peremabiri Community, located in the Southern Ijaw Local Government of Bayelsa State. The boat accident took place at the Onyoma/Oporoma river.

John Jerry, hailing from Akwa Ibom State, was not only a remarkable athlete but also a standout wrestler in the country, as acknowledged by the NWF. President Daniel Igali personally brought Jerry into the Wrestling Federation due to his outstanding performance during training at the Yenagoa wrestling center.

Expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, the federation also extended condolences to President Daniel Igali, who is grieving the loss of his uncle, Gellesthorpe.

The Nigeria Wrestling Federation, in its statement, conveyed heartfelt prayers for strength to the families of John Jerry and Gellesthorpe, seeking solace from the Almighty in this difficult time.

As the wrestling community comes to terms with this devastating loss, the NWF is left to remember John Jerry not just as an athlete but as a vibrant and promising individual who contributed significantly to the sport. The entire wrestling fraternity joins in mourning the passing of these two individuals and hopes for the families to find the strength to endure their grief.
