Bawumia Concedes Defeat to Mahama as Ruling NPP Loses Ghana’s Presidential Election

Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s vice-president and presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has conceded defeat to John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the country’s presidential election.

Preliminary results indicate a decisive victory for Mahama, who has garnered 976,644 votes, representing 56.39 percent, compared to Bawumia’s 738,493 votes, or 42.64 percent. The NDC has also secured a majority in the parliamentary elections, solidifying their comeback.

Speaking at a press conference from his residence on Sunday, Bawumia announced his decision to concede, emphasizing that it was in the best interest of the nation. He disclosed that he had called Mahama to congratulate him on his victory.

“The data from our own internal collation of the election results indicate that former President John Dramani Mahama has won the presidential election decisively,” Bawumia said. “The NDC has also won the parliamentary election. Even though we await the final collation of a number of seats, I believe ultimately these will not change the outcome.”

Bawumia explained that his concession speech, delivered before the official announcement by the electoral commission, was aimed at reducing tension and preserving Ghana’s reputation as a peaceful and democratic nation. He underscored the importance of maintaining the confidence of the global investor community in Ghana’s stability.

“I accept the decision of Ghanaians with all humility,” he added.

Mahama, who previously served as president but lost his re-election bid to Nana Akufo-Addo in 2017, is now set to return to the presidency in January 2025.
